We hear in this Sunday’s first reading that God was speaking to Samuel, but he was unfamiliar with his voice. I can relate to struggling to hear what God is saying, but I am increasingly confident that God is always speaking, even though I can have a hard time “tuning in” to His voice.
A challenge for you as you read this: ask the Holy Spirit to show you or remind you the last time you heard God’s voice.
God can speak in many, many ways, but here are some common “languages” that He uses:
1. Scripture: The most clear and definitive way He speaks. Has there been a line from scripture that deeply resonated with you recently? 2. Conscience: have you been aware of the Holy Spirit inviting you to do a good deed or to avoid something you knew was against God’s will? 3. Prayer: Has your time of prayer brought you peace, joy, or a sense of God’s love for you? 4. People: Has someone said something to you, maybe even in passing, that you knew carried a deeper message from God for you? 5. Music: Has there been a song that has spoken directly into your life and reassured you of God’s care for you? 6. Nature: Have you been caught up in stars or a spectacular sunset/rise that pointed you back to praising God? 7. Books/Talks: Has there been something that you have read or heard that spiritually landed right where you needed it? 8. Events: Have things happened or lined up in such a way that you knew God had orchestrated it? 9. Your body: Have you physically experienced healing or a warmth, coolness, tingling, sense of peace, etc that told you the Spirit was moving in a key moment 10. Service: Have you experienced God’s love for you even though you were the one serving someone else?
I hope just seeing a few of these categories of how He might speak helps you to tune in as He inevitably tries to get your attention this week!
