Friends, having spent a little bit of time breaking open the story of Curtis Martin, Dr. Sri, and Focus (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) last week, let us now transition to their concept of spiritual multiplication this week. Ask yourself this question. How does an original small group comprised of 2 professors and 6 students, become 800 active missionaries today, on hundreds of college campus’, who have served tens of thousands of students in the last 25 years? Answer. Spiritual multiplication. And what is Focus’ formula? Win. Build. Send.
By win, Focus means providing individuals who do not yet know the love of Christ, with an opportunity to encounter ‘something more’. And by something more they mean the Gospel and God’s Fatherly love. This can happen in any number of ways, but typically it is tied to a very intentional relationship ministry (friendship, good conversation, and a small group where people begin to experience being seen, known, and loved). Once the individual comes to discover the Gospel and God’s Fatherly love their heart is pierced and Focus calls this a win.
By build, Focus means fanning into flame the ‘hunger for more’ which those who have discovered God’s love all share in common. This too can happen in any number of ways (virtuous friendships, the grace of the Sacraments, Bible studies), the key is simply to build the person up by offering them opportunities to practice ‘life in Christ’.
Finally, by send, Focus means going out on mission as a missionary disciple. And by missionary disciple Focus means possessing the capacity to lead a small group, share your testimony, share the Gospel, walk with others etc. When you really break it down, it is nothing more than a response to the Great Commission of Jesus at the end of the Matthew’s Gospel. “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age (Mt. 28:19-20).
